In this paper, a literature review on thermocline storage performance for Concentrating
Solar Power (CSP) plant storage systems has been conducted. The
efficiency of materials to store heat depends on the storage process like sensible
heat storage, latent heat storage and thermochemical one and also on their
properties. This study has been focused on sensible heat storage materials especially
thermocline storage system (DMT) using eco-materials which has a
high potentiality (35%) to reduce CSP cost. There is a possibility to use natural
rocks, industry waste and to develop also materials for a thermocline storage
within a bed called packed bed using one tank. The thermal storage materials
should have some optimum parameters (particle diameter less than 2
cm and good thermo-physical properties) to achieve better thermal storage
performance (thermal cycle efficiency, extraction factor). However, the size
and the shape of natural rocks are uncontrollable (big diameter) and can
drive to thermocline degradation, catastrophic thermal ratcheting and poor
thermal stratification due to the variability of the storage system porosity and
the stress on the storage tank wall. Also a better thermal storage efficiency is
achievable at low velocity and with good thermo-physical properties of the
HTF. The ratio H/D, the height, the porosity, the shape and the position of
the tank should be optimized to increase the storage efficiency.

his paper presents a review of solid particle size effect on thermocline storage performance for Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) storage systems. After an overview on the different process to store thermal energy we found that a particle size of 2cm diameter is better to achieve a good sensitive heat storage performance within a system call dual-medium thermocline (DMT). The thermal storage potential of different sands from Burkina Faso have been carried out to look at the possibility of making a filler material with 2cm diameter. However, two different sands (mining dune and river sand) properties have been assessed. The density of the two samples is more than with low mass losses at 700°C without any agglomeration at 900°C and 1000°C. This indicates that the mining sand samples from Bobo Dioulasso and Dune sand from Sahel region in Burkina (Oursi) have the potentials to be used to develop an effective thermal energy storage material or to store thermal energy at high temperature.

Valorisation of local and low-cost eco-materials have become an imperative for the sustainable development of Concentrating Solar Power (CSP) in West Africa. In this study, the compatibility tests were carried out. These involve the application of jatropha curcas oil (JCCO) and ceramic balls, which were developed from clay coal bottom ash and sands with a focus on Burkina dune sand ceramic. The aim was to assess the applicability of using JCCO as heat transfer fluid in CSPs with direct thermocline thermal energy storage. The tests involve the use of a small container to put in contact with Jatropha oil with ceramic balls for 2160 hours and at 210 °C. From the chemical properties’ analysis, the peroxide value in the oil decreases with aging time while the acidity increase. However, the acidity remains below the limited value that is 25 mg KOH.g-1. Therefore, thermal properties that drive heat transfer and rheological properties (density, thermal conductivity, kinematic viscosity and so on) were not adjusted significantly at the storage temperature (of about 210°C). Thermal stability temperature decreased to 261.93°C for the oil aged alone as against 263.41 °C for the one that was put in contact with filler material. In the nutshell, there is no incompatibility between JCCO, and the new thermal energy storage material (TESM) developed. These couple of materials could be suitable for thermocline energy storage in CSP plant and for other applications like there use in solar cooker box.

This paper addresses industry sector like concentrating solar power
(CSP) plant used for electricity generation. Up till now, this
technology is not affordable for developing countries where CSP
potential is good. To contribute on the improvement of CSP
technology, ceramic balls using sand clay and industry waste (coal
bottom ash) have been developed for sensible heat storage. In this
paper, the one dimensional two phase model has been chosen to
predict the behaviour of the ceramic oil and vegetal oil (Jatropha
curcas oil) thermal energy storage system. The results show that high
porosity (> 45%), filler material with big size and high fluid velocity
are not required for thermal energy storage because of the degradation
of the thermocline. Taking into account a tank ratio H/D of 2.5 and
a total stored energy of 2MWhth , the results show a possibility to
reach a discharge time of 9 hours with discharge efficiency of more
than 90%. The thermocline thickness variation under the variation of
fluid velocity, particle diameter, tank porosity shows that for an
effective thermal energy storage system, the thermocline maximal
thickness is around one third of the packed-bed height. To conclude,
the developed ceramic ball and Jatropha curcas oil could be
considered as an innovative and cost-effective for thermal energy
storage in CSP or other applications like solar cooker.
